49ers Gets Off the Preseason vs. Raiders

49ers Gets Off the Preseason vs. Raiders

It’s official: football is returned! After two joint practises with the team earlier in the week, the San Francisco 49ers began their preseason schedule on Sunday afternoon in Las Vegas against the Raiders.

While the majority of the 49ers’ expected starters worked out, the majority of the first teams on offence and defence did not take the field for the first preseason game. Younger players, draught picks, newbies to the team, and undrafted additions were all present in Sunday’s game.

“We have two effective strategies against them. Kyle Shanahan, head coach, stated, “I always like when we can do that and we practised really hard with the ones the second day so we don’t have to dress any of them today.

“I by no means enjoyed that game today, but many guys got a lot of valuable reps and that gives them a chance to make our team and gives us a chance to coach them up tomorrow,” said the player.

Here are six lessons to be learned from Sunday’s game:

Trey Lance, a third-year quarterback, started the game on Sunday and, after settling in, increased output in the second half.

On the team’s fourth possession, he directed the 49ers down the field, finishing with a nine-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ross Dwelley to cap off a seven-play, 61-yard drive.

Duke Shelley of the Raiders intercepted Lance’s pass as he fired into the end zone, setting up Dwelley for the score.

Dwelley ultimately made a fantastic play, said Lance. “I didn’t believe they’d be able to get to it, but the defence made a terrific play. Guys made outstanding plays, and it worked out for the touchdown.

The third down convert to wide receiver Chris Conley for a 17-yard gain was Lance’s most outstanding play of the day. With 10 of 15 passes completed for 112 yards, a touchdown, and a passer rating of 111.0, he finished the day.

Sam Darnold took over in the second half and directed the 49ers on two out of three drives into Las Vegas territory, but those scoring chances were cut short by a turnover on downs, a fumble and a failed field goal.

Early in the fourth quarter, after completing five of eight throws for 84 yards, he was replaced by Brandon Allen.

Shanahan remarked, “I felt (Darnold) did a tremendous job coming in the second half. “You’re in there with the offensive line’s twos and threes, and the same goes for the receivers and everyone else. For that reason, we wanted to be cautious with Sam, but we also wanted him to have fun.

Allen spent the most of the second half at the quarterback position and completed five of his eight throw attempts for 36 yards.

Clelin Ferrell, a defensive lineman with the 49ers, recorded his first sack.
After four seasons with the Raiders, the former first-round pick signed with San Francisco in March and has since started contributing for the red and gold.

Aidan O’Connell, the quarterback for Las Vegas, was sacked by Ferrell for a loss of six yards, and he celebrated the sack with his trademark fishing pole. After then, on fourth-and-seven, the Raiders punted the ball.

Ambry Thomas, a cornerback, followed his impressive performance from training camp in Las Vegas with a number of flashy plays.

Thomas had a stellar first half, recording two significant pass breakups and a fourth-down run stop. The third-year cornerback missed the second part of the 2022 season due to an ankle injury, but he has since made a significant comeback.

The Las Vegas drive was stopped after two plays when Thomas intercepted a pass intended for wide receiver Tre Tucker on third-and-seven. On Las Vegas’ final offensive play of the first half, he recorded his second PBU and stopped a long gain on first-and-ten.

Together, Thomas and defensive lineman Kerry Hyder Jr. stopped Raiders running back Zamir White in his tracks in the second quarter, leading to a turnover on downs.

At Allegiant Stadium, rookie kicker Jake Moody made his NFL debut.
Moody was selected by the 49ers in the third round, 99th overall, of the 2023 NFL Draught, making big headlines.

On Sunday, he had his first opportunity to play in front of an NFL crowd under stadium lights. The youngster missed both of his field goal attempts from 40 and 58 yards out while making all of his extra point attempts.

Shanahan stated, “I’m not concerned about the kicking situation. I am aware of the pressure he is under, and I know that everyone is watching, yet he missed those two today.

He has excelled during practise. All of them have been struck by him. I was simply eager to try a lengthy one, which was enjoyable, but my toes missed.

There are no problems with me because he has been fantastic and takes care of himself.

Ronnie Bell, a wide receiver, presented a case for why he should replace the 49ers’ punt returner.

The seventh-round pick is one of a few candidates, along with wide receiver Willie Snead IV and cornerback D’Shawn Jamison, to fill in as the team’s punt and kick returner.

Wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud III, a return specialist for San Francisco from 2022, injured his wrist during practise on Tuesday and is anticipated to miss the next eight weeks.

Bell handled two punts for a yard and three kickoff returns for 57 yards during the first half of San Francisco’s game on Sunday. He contributed significantly to the passing game as well, hauling in three passes for 57 yards.

“I thought Ronnie did some really good things in the return game, he had the jet sweep and made some good passes,” Shanahan remarked.

“It was unfortunate because his best route was the one he served up to him on the pick. I believed those young wide outs displayed some positive traits.

In the second half, Jamison and running back Jeremy McNichols each had the chance to split return specialist responsibilities.

Problems with turnovers slowed the 49ers’ offensive output.

Late in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter, San Francisco committed turnovers that the Raiders took advantage of to score 14 points.

The more opportunities for Las Vegas to get the ball and the missed field goal attempts led to a significant amount of the Sunday point deficit.
