Not long after the Washington Nationals claimed a 4-2 win over the Cardinals on Sunday, the Washington Nationals announced that they signed RHP Livan Hernandez to a one-year contract extension that will be worth $1 million in addition to bonus incentives.

With Stephen Strasburg’s Major League debut not going exactly as expected from the beginning is now having to undergo surgery so the Nationals had to take a step forward and do something to help ensure a stable and strong team for next season.

The 35-year-old is currently 9-9 with an earned run average of 3.49 for his 27 starts this year.  He rejoined the Washington Nationals August 25 of 2009 in which he has started 35 games and is 11-13 with an earned run average of 3.90.

The RHP has started 94 games for his career with the Nationals in which he has gone 35-31 with an earned run average of 4.27.  Over his entire career for 162 starts including a Montreal franchise, Hernandez has gone 61-56 with an earned run average of 3.89.

In 15 seasons and 440 games in the MLB, Hernandez has gone 165-160 with an earned run average of 4.39.  He has been with the Nationals, Rockies, Mets, Twins, Giants, Diamondbacks as well as the Marlins.  In addition, Hernandez is the club’s all-time leader in starts at 94, wins at 35, innings pitched at 617 as well as strikeouts at 354.

Hernandez is the very first pitcher in the Major Leagues that has been able to start a minimum of 30 games in 12 consecutive seasons.  As of right now, Hernandez will start next Friday’s game against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.  If he does in fact start that game, he’ll need only two more starts in order to make this season his 13th consecutive season with at least 30 starts.
