Once the three-year $65 million dollar contract extension offer from the Denver Nuggets to superstar forward Carmelo Anthony was left on the table early in the NBA regular season, the league was filled with speculation about what might happen with one of the league’s best players.

At first, the consensus was that the Nuggets would ultimately get something done with Melo as many people believe that he was just holding out for more money, but after awhile the truth started to emerge as it became clear that he wanted to play for the New York Knicks.

Not only does Melo’s wife Lala Vasquez work in the Big Apple, but the All-Star forward also played his college ball with Syracuse and has a soft spot for New York like most big-name professional athletes do. With that being said, the Nuggets were set to lose a hot commodity in arguably the best player to ever play for their franchise this summer when Melo becomes a free agent.

Obviously, with Melo showing his desire to sign with the Knicks in the offseason, the Nuggets will be forced to make a trade before the NBA trade deadline on Feb. 24, 2011. The deal will most likely be with the Knicks, but recently the two-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers have also got involved.

A deal to the Lakers is a stretch, but another trade possibility has popped up with the New Jersey Nets getting back in the mix for Melo. The Nets were arguably the most aggressive team in pursuit for Melo, but never really saw eye to eye with the Nuggets. As a result, a few potential deals with New Jersey fell apart and Melo remain in the Mile High City.

On Thursday morning, the Nets appear to be back in the running as a potential deal sending rookie Derrick Favors, sharpshooter Troy Murphy and draft picks might be on the table for the Nuggets. Talk about NBA betting, we’ll see how this turns out.
