About a year ago, one of the most anticipated matchups in the NBA was the defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers going head to head against arguably the best team in the Eastern Conference in LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers. This season that is not the case as ever since LeBron James took his talents to South Beach, the Cavs have gone head first into downward spiral that has turned them into arguably the worst team in the league.
Earlier in this NBA regular season, the Cleveland Cavaliers looked like they could be a legitimate playoff team as all the role players that used to surround LeBron started to step up and pick up the slack, but then they lost that spark and started to lose on a nightly basis.
Coming into their matchup against the two-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers, the Cleveland Cavaliers had lost 10 straight, but they had no idea what they were in for when they took the floor at the Staples Center on Tuesday night.
Obviously, a team that has lost 10 straight games really doesn’t stand much of a chance against a two-time defending champ, but getting no one expected the Cavs lose as bad as they did against the Lakers.
Not only did the Lakers just destroy the Cavs on Tuesday night, but they blew out Byron Scott’s squad by 55 points and held Cleveland to a franchise-low 57 points 112-57.
Even though you might think that Kobe Bryant went off for 60 and Pau Gasol probably added 30+, this was a real team effort by the Lakers as seven players scored in double figures and the reigning NBA Finals MVP finished with just 13 points in 25 minutes.
Despite this being an impressive and historic win for the Lakers, the real story here is just how far the Cavs have fallen off since the departure of LeBron James. Whether or not this team will get it together remains to be seen, but I am betting there will be some serious trade talk between now and the February deadline in Cleveland.
