Over the past few years, the Dallas Mavericks have been one of the teams in the NBA that could be compared to the New York Yankees in the MLB. Not in terms of wins and championships of course, but in terms of buying and trading players.
Both the Yankees and the Mavs have no problem dishing out the cash to improve their rosters every single season. This year the Mavs were rumored to make a big splash before the NBA trade deadline in order to contend with the two-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers and the league best San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference.
So far the Dallas Mavericks have done pretty well as they have stayed relatively healthy and are the second seed in the West just above the defending champs and behind the Spurs, but as usual, Mavs owner wasn’t content with his current squad and decided to make a move.
In a way to make his bench that much deeper, Cuban went after the recently bought out Corey Brewer. With the New York Knicks not interested in taking on his services, the young shooting guard was bought out and made available to the highest bidder. Even though teams like the Chicago Bulls seemed to be interested as they were looking for another shooting guard, the Dallas Mavericks were quick on the draw as the signed Brewer to address some of their defensive concerns as the approach the playoffs.
With this signing, the Dallas Mavericks should become considerably better on the defensive side of the floor, but they will also get some scoring off the bench as well. This won’t put them over the top in terms of competing with the Lakers or Spurs, but it will definitely make them a better all around team.
