The past two seasons, Josh Powell has been a backup for the Los Angeles Lakers. Monday, Powell signed as a free agent with the Atlanta Hawks to provide back up to Atlanta’s Josh Smith as well as Al Horford according to a press release issued by the Hawks. Specific conditions of the agreement between Powell and the Atlanta Hawks were not immediately disclosed due to team policies.
The 6-foot-9 graduate from Atlanta’s Riverdale High School plays forward/center position and averaged 2.4 rebounds and 3.4 points per game while with the Los Angeles Lakers for two years. He had an average of 1.8 rebounds and 2.7 points per game during his 63 games with Los Angeles just this past season. He also played in 13 of the playoff games this year but didn’t make much of an impression not even averaging a whole rebound or point per game.
27-year-old Powell attended North Carolina State where he left following his second collegiate year but was not drafted in 2003 NBA Draft and went on to play overseas in Europe prior to uniting with the Dallas Mavericks two years later in 2005. Powell has also played with three other teams including the Indiana Pacers, Golden State Warriors, and the LA Clippers, whom during the 2007-2008 season, he started a total of 25 games.
Over a career total of 261 games, which includes 28 starts, the forward/center has an average of almost 4 points per game and 3 rebounds per game with all five of the teams he has played with. He can now add to his career average with his sixth NBA team, the Atlanta Hawks.
With Powell, the Hawks now have their roster up to 11 but require two more to make it to the league’s 13 minimum. According to rumors, there are still two more prospects that the Atlanta Hawks have their eyes on. Jason Collins and Shaquille O’Neal are both potential targets that the Atlanta Hawks are interested in.
