Coming into Thursday night’s South Beach showdown, the Miami Heat had lost five straight games and had a lot of people talking about whether or not this new “Big Three” was going to work out in South Beach.

Fortunately, LeBron James and company had the perfect opportunity to turn things around as they were facing arguably the best team in the league in the two-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers. With a win over the Lakers, the Heat would be able to silence their critics, at least for the time being.

Even though the Lakers were favored to come out on top in this game, the Heat came out with the kind of fire and intensity of a playoff game as Erik Spoelstra’s squad knew how important this game would be moving forward.

All game long, the Lakers and the Heat went back and forth as both teams had their fair share of time with the lead. At times, the defending champs looked like they were going to run away with it and the same could be said for the Heat, but when the game came down to the wire Miami stepped it up.

There is some debate about a few questionable calls down the stretch that could have tilted scales in favor of the Lakers, but ultimately the Heat were just the better all around team that night and were finally able to snap their 5-game losing streak. Along with snapping their losing streak, they were able to snap the Lakers 8-game winning streak.

This is obviously a step in the right direction for the Heat as they have proven they can compete with the league’s elite by beating arguably the best team in the NBA, but whether or not they can keep playing at this level consistently remains to be seen.
