The two-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers have been in the news a lot lately as they have been surrounded with NBA trade rumors and questions on whether or not they can still compete for an NBA title this season. Even though this is the last year for Hall of Fame head coach Phil Jackson on the sidelines and both Derek Fisher and Kobe Bryant aren’t getting any younger, this team is still as good as it gets when firing on all cylinders.

Recently, the Lakers went into Boston and got the best of the arch rival Celtics. That win over the Celtics in Boston convinced a lot of people that the defending champs were back to form, but shortly after they started to struggle once again with consecutive losses to the Orlando Magic and Charlotte Bobcats.

If the consecutive losses to the Magic and the Bobcats weren’t bad enough, Kobe Bryant and company headed to Cleveland for their last game of the first half of the season before heading into the All-Star break and lost to arguably the worst team in the league in the Cavs. If you had taken the -11 points on this game with some easy NBA betting, you would have been pretty surprised.

This was a close game when it ended as the Cavs only won by five (104-99), but the reigning NBA champions losing to the worst team in the league is something that just shouldn’t happen.

Along with getting beaten by the worst team in the league, the Lakers got little production from Kobe Bryant (17 points, 8 for 25, seven turnovers) and if Pau Gasol (30 points, 20 rebounds) didn’t have his best game of the season, they might have gotten blown out by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Fortunately, the Lakers will be on a little bit of a break here as they will be hosting the 2011 NBA All-Star game in Los Angeles, but with this loss trade rumors have started to swirl around the defending champs once again as a move might be made before the NBA trade deadline (Feb. 24).
