One of the most successful NBA franchises over the past 15 years or so has been without a doubt the San Antonio Spurs. No matter what changes this NBA franchise goes through they always put a great basketball team on the floor every single night and have a legitimate shot at contending for an NBA title in any given season.
This season has been somewhat of a wakeup call for the San Antonio Spurs as they have seen good teams in the Western Conference become great teams with young talent and superb coaching.
Obviously over the past couple of years the Los Angeles Lakers have been the team to beat out West and Kobe Bryant and company have formed what might be considered a dynasty in Los Angeles once again.
Even though the Lakers are the team to beat, there are plenty of other teams in the conference that seem to also have a good chance of competing for title like the Utah Jazz, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks and the Denver Nuggets. All four of these teams are currently fighting for the second seed in the Western Conference and will be heavyweights in the conference for the foreseeable future.
This is not good news for the San Antonio Spurs who are starting to show signs of age and quite possibly the end of the Tim Duncan era in Texas.
Things were even going to get worse this offseason as the Spurs had an extremely important decision to make on arguably their best player behind Tim Duncan in the versatile Manu Ginobili.
If the Spurs didn’t agree to a contract extension with their offensive machine in Ginobili before the summer, San Antonio would have almost certainly lost him to another team around the league willing to throw a lot of money at him.
Fortunately, just in time for the playoffs, the Spurs were able to sign Manu Ginobili to a three-year contract extension for about $38 million dollars.
