Even though the NBA season ended a few weeks ago with the Los Angeles Lakers winning their second straight NBA title against the Boston Celtics, the NBA has still been a hot topic as NBA free agency is officially underway with some big-names becoming available to the highest bidder.
There is no doubt that LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh are the big fish in this free agency pool, but there are some other big-names that were a lot of talk for opting out of their current contracts.
The two most surprising big-name players to opt out were one-time NBA MVP Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics leading scorer Paul Pierce. Both of these elite players are arguably on the verge of being on the downside of their hall of fame caliber careers in the NBA, but are still vital parts of their current NBA franchise and are a must sign for the Mavs and Celtics.
Even though there was some speculation that Dirk Nowitzki might be headed elsewhere, the seven foot German sharp shooter remained loyal to his current team and signed a four-year contract worth about $81 million dollars. Not only is Dirk worth every penny of this contract, but this will almost certainly be the last big contract he signs in this league before calling it quits.
As for Paul Pierce, there wasn’t much doubt that he would return to Boston as he has been loyal to the Celtics through the good times and bad, but with the future uncertain for head coach Doc Rivers (will coach the Boston Celtics next season) and shooting guard Ray Allen (still unsigned), Pierce might have jumped ship.
Reportedly, Pierce has agreed to a four-year deal as well worth about $61 million dollars. Much like Dirk, this will most likely be the last contract this All-Star will sign. The sports betting world is paying close attention to all the latest NBA trades in preparation for the 2011 Season.

Dirk Nowitzki is the man and Dallas would have been crazy not to re-sign him like they did. Whenever you can keep a seven foot German dude who can shoot like that, you gotta do it
