Tom Brady becomes minority owner at Birmingham City

Tom Brady, a former NFL star, has joined Birmingham City, a team in the Championship division of English football.

The owners of Birmingham, Knighthead Capital Management LLC, and the seven-time Super Bowl winner quarterback have partnered, and the quarterback will lead the club’s advisory board.

Brady will “apply his extensive leadership experience and expertise across several components of the club,” according to a statement from Birmingham, “including working alongside the sports science department to advise on health, nutrition, wellness, and recovery systems and programmes.”

After 23 seasons in the NFL, during which he was awarded MVP five times, won the Super Bowl seven times, and established himself as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game, he announced his retirement in February 2023.

Brady’s declaration makes him the second recently retired NFL player to show interest in English football in the past three months, following JJ Watt, who on May 1 became a minor investor in Premier League team Burnley.

Brady admits that he still has a lot to learn about English football, but he is eager to share his knowledge with the team.

So, Brady announced that he was officially joining Birmingham City Football Club. What do you know about English football, Tom, may be what you’re asking. Let’s just say that I still have a lot to learn. But I do have some knowledge of winning, and I believe that will translate fairly effectively.

“I am aware that success begins with the labour done when no one is looking. I am aware that a team cannot succeed without the support of the community.

“Most significantly, I am aware that I enjoy the underdog role. Birmingham has had a difficult road, but its supporters have never lost hope.

I’ll see you shortly at St. Andrew’s. Time to get working.

Since the acquisition was finalised on May 8, the new owners have hired former Man City manager Garry Cook as their new CEO and selected former England manager Hope Powell to serve as the organization’s women’s technical director. The most recent acquisition is Brady.

“Tom Brady joining the Birmingham City team is a statement of intent,” said Tom Wagner, the board chairman of Birmingham. We’re aiming for world-class performance. Tom is dedicating his considerable experience as well as spending his time. Tom’s influence on the Club as chair of the advisory board will be felt immediately.

“The knowledge will be useful to the Men’s, Women’s, and Academy teams. Making Birmingham City a reputable leader in nutrition, health, wellbeing, and recovery throughout the football world is the objective Tom has vowed to own.

Brady continued, “Being a member of the Birmingham City team is a genuine honour for me. The club is legendary and has a rich history and fan base. The foundation of BCFC is teamwork and tenacity, and I’m eager to work with the board, management, and players to transform our Second City club into a powerhouse.

“I’ve been a part of some amazing teams in my day, and I’m looking forward to applying my perspective to create that same success here in Birmingham.”
