Eric Belanger, a free agent center, signed with the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday. Sources confirm that the deal is a one-year contract worth $750,000.
32-year-old Belanger is a nine-year veteran and played with the Minnesota Wild last season prior to the Washington Capitals acquiring him at trade deadline. The Coyotes make Belanger sixth team in his NHL career. He will join the Coyotes this season and leave behind Minnesota, Washington, Atlanta, Carolina and Los Angeles.
He is a very talented hockey player that is smart at the game and quick in play. He is a strong, dedicated player – just take a look at his history in the playoffs this last April. He made headlines but it wasn’t for scoring the most points or having the most assists – in fact, it was for getting struck in the mouth with a hockey stick by an opposing player. This happened in Washington during the first period of Game 5 of the series against Montreal. He ended up losing about half a dozen of his teeth and received emergency dental work – not outside the arena, but at the arena – and then returned to the game just in time to play in the third period. He has strong dedication to his team and to his sport – he isn’t one to let his team down.
Belanger has played in a total of 37 playoff games and has recorded at least 13 goals and at least 33 points in all but two of his NHL seasons. Since being drafted back in 1996 in the fourth round of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft by Los Angeles he has participated in 634 NHL career games and has recorded 299 points – 121 of those beings goal points and 178 of those being assists – with 283 penalty minutes.
