It goes to show that the underdog can claim a victory.  That’s right – in the quarter finals soccer match between the Netherlands and Brazil Friday morning, Netherlands overtook Brazil to claim the victory and to advance to the semi finals where they will find themselves up against Uruguay who was able to beat out Ghana in their quarter final soccer match Friday afternoon.

Brazil, the five-time World Cup champions were defeated by the Netherlands with a final score of 2-1.  This was the first time that the Netherlands, since being defeated by Brazil at the 1998 World Cup with penalty kicks, has made it to the semi-finals.  Winning this soccer match against Brazil, the Netherlands are 5-0 with winning all five matches and creates a team record of 24 games undefeated.

That was Friday morning.  Friday afternoon was the quarter final match between Uruguay and Ghana.  Uruguay defeated Ghana with 4-2 penalty kicks on a 1-1 draw.  The extra time for the soccer match was achieved when Diego Forlan netted a goal during the 55th minute of the match.  This is the first time that Uruguay has been in the final four teams since back in 1970 – that is 40 years!  Ghana failed to successfully claim the title of being the first African team to ever reach the semi finals for the FIFA World Cup.

Tuesday, the Netherlands will face the two-time World Cup champions Uruguay to find out which team has what it takes to advance to the finals.  Saturday will determine the other two teams that will reach the semi-finals and get one step closer to finding the opponent for either Uruguay or the Netherlands in the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals in South Africa.
