The Dwight Howard trade rumors have been all anyone can talk about in the NBA besides the NBA lockout. With Howard being one of the best all-around players in the league and arguably the best center in the NBA since Shaq in his prime, there is no question that plenty of teams in the league will be doing everything within their power to bring in the defensive beast. A few days ago, perennial All-Star point guard Deron Williams dropped a bombshell on the NBA as he announced his intentions to play for Besiktas in Turkey during the NBA lockout. This is pending of course and will be void if the NBA gets underway at the time it is supposed to, but with the way things are going right now it seems like a good possibility. Continue Reading…
Over the past decade or so in the NBA, there has been a serious shortage of dominant centers in the league with only Shaquille O’Neal and Dwight Howard being the best at their position. Despite these two big men dominating in the paint, there was one other center that started to turn heads in the form of Chinese import Yao Ming. Continue Reading…
The 2011 MLB All-Star Game is just around the corner and with the All-Star Game comes the always popular Home Run Derby. This year will be intriguing to say the least as there will be some veteran sluggers and first-time competitors on the rosters of both the AL and NL Home Run Derby squads. Continue Reading…
Just like the NFL did a little more than a 100 days ago, the NBA has now locked out the players and restricted any business being conducted between players and teams until a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is agreed upon. This doesn’t really come as much of a surprise to teams and players around the league as this was predicted even before the start of last season, but with all the trouble the NFL has been going through as of late to get their new CBA in place the hope was that the NBA would wise up and not follow in those footsteps. Back in 2007, the Portland Trail Blazers had an extremely tough decision to make between whether to pick scoring machine Kevin Durant from Texas or perhaps the next best center in Ohio State’s Greg Oden with the number one pick in the 2007 NBA draft. Even though this decision seems silly at this point in time as Oden is now labeled as a bust due to injury problems and Kevin Durant is arguably one of the best scorers in NBA history, the Blazers had a tough time making the decision and ultimately went with the promising center out of Ohio State.
These days the Portland Trail Blazers franchise feels a bit cursed when it comes to making picks in the NBA draft as they never seem to make the right decision and always pass on a future Hall of Famer like Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder) and Michael Jordan (Chicago Bulls), but even though Blazers fans want to forget about the Greg Oden experiment in Portland, the Blazers aren’t ready to give up just yet.
Reportedly, the Blazers have offered Oden a pretty lucrative deal to stay in Portland for at least one more season. The deal will be worth $8.8 million dollars and if Oden doesn’t take it then he can kiss his chances of making that kind of money in the NBA goodbye!
This is godsend for Greg Oden as no other team in the league right now will offer the injury prone more than a couple of million for one season. Not only will teams around the league be looking to offer Oden much less than what the Blazers are offering, but the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) might make it even tougher for the former Buckeyes’ center moving forward.
Last season the Minnesota Vikings were considered to be a legitimate Super Bowl title contender with future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre under center for one more season, arguably the best running back in the game in the backfield in Adrian Peterson and up-and-coming wide receiver Sidney Rice downfield. Even though the Vikings were extremely talented, this Super Bowl title contender fell apart with injuries and an aging veteran quarterback that could no longer play at the NFL level. Last season the Miami Heat was officially dubbed the new enemies of the NBA. After signing three superstars in Dwyane Wade (re-signed), LeBron James (free agency) and Chris Bosh (free agency), the Miami Heat were instantly favorites to win the NBA title and they had no problem letting the rest of the league know that they were the team to beat.
After the three superstars were officially in South Beach, they Heat had a rally of sorts and LeBron James said this team would win up to seven NBA titles. In their first season together, the Heat lived up to their end of the deal as they made it to the NBA Finals, but came two games short of winning the title as the veteran Dallas Mavericks were able to beat them in six games. The Carolina Panthers were arguably the worst team in the NFL last year and in desperate need of some drastic changes moving forward. Even though they had drafted what they thought was the future face of the franchise in quarterback Jimmy Clausen out of Notre Dame, the once promising young quarterback turned out to be a bust in his first season and forced the hand of the Carolina Panthers in the most recent draft to take quarterback Cam Newton with the first overall pick. The Plaxico Burress sweepstakes has officially begun as he has been released from prison and will be available to the highest bidder. Even though Burress has been in prison for the last two years and isn’t getting any younger at 33-years-old (34 in August), there are still a lot of teams around the league are very interested in the veteran wide receiver.
