Over the past few years in Dallas, the Cowboys have had one of the most potent offenses in the NFL with Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo under center and one of the most talented receiving corps in the league. Despite all the talent on the offensive side of the football with names like Jason Witten, Miles Austin and Dez Bryant, the Cowboys have been sorely lacking in the running game with no reliable running back coming out of the backfield.
This season things started to look up for the Dallas Cowboys in the ground game with the emergence of up-and-coming running back DeMarco Murray. With the injury to starting running back Felix Jones, the Cowboys turned to Murray to fill the void and may have found the answer to their problems in the running game as the unknown running back has quickly turned into one of the players at his position in the league.
Unfortunately, DeMarco Murray went down with season-ending ankle injury in the loss to the division rival New York Giants on Sunday night. Usually, ankle injuries can be something that running backs and other offensive players can bounce back from relatively quick, but in this case Murray has fractured his right ankle and will require surgery to get him back on the gridiron as soon as possible.
Despite having surgery to repair the ankle, Murray will be out for the remainder of the season and placed on injured reserve (IR). With Murray out for the year, the Cowboys will make Felix Jones the starter once again and could look at signing veteran running back Sammy Morris who is scheduled to visit the team on Tuesday.
Without a solid running game, the Dallas Cowboys offense could fall flat once again and might struggle in the last three weeks of the season to contend with the New York Giants in the NFC East division standings.
