A lot of college basketball analysts believe that the true number one overall seed in the NCAA Tournament is the team that dominates in the best conference in the country throughout the entire regular season. Even though the consensus around the country is that the Ohio State Buckeyes might be the team to beat in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, the Pittsburgh Panthers could be making a case for being the real team to beat as they played extremely well this season in the Big East conference.
Ironically enough, the Pittsburgh Panthers could be the best team heading into the NCAA Tournament, but they are the one team of all the number one seeds (Ohio State Buckeyes, Duke Blue Devils and Kansas Jayhawks) with the weakest competition as they could potentially run the table in the Southeast Region with relative ease.
Even though the consensus is that the Panthers could have the easy path to the Final Four when compared to the three other number one seeds in the NCAA Tournament, they do have some teams in the Southeast that might give them a run for their money. The first team that comes to mind is Jimmer Fredette’s BYU Cougars (3).
With Fredette just playing out of his mind as of late and making a strong case for Player of the Year, the Cougars could be dangerous throughout the entire tournament, but ultimately I am not sure they can compete with the best of the best as they aren’t exactly the best well rounded team.
Along with BYU (6), there are few others teams that could also pose a threat in the Southeast in the form of the Kansas State Wildcats (5), St. John’s Red Storm (6) Wisconsin Badgers (4), UCLA Bruins (7) and Florida Gators (2). We will have the latest odds from top online sportsbooks coming soon.
Second Round: Pittsburgh Panthers (1) vs. North Carolina-Asheville Bulldogs (16)/Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans (16) Thurs. March 17, 2011 3:10 p.m. EST
