The Boston Celtics are on the verge of an end of an era with the Big 3 starting to show their age and the rest of the Eastern Conference starting to come alive with the emergence of young teams like the Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers and the Indiana Pacers. With Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce being in the twilight of their careers in the NBA, the Celtics and GM Danny Ainge have started to explore their options.
The one player that has been linked to the most trade rumors on the current Boston Celtics roster is arguably the best players on the team right now in point guard Rajon Rondo. With Rondo being mentioned in these rumors all season long, the frustration may have gotten to a boiling point recently when the up-and-coming point guard threw a basketball at a referee and was ejected as a result.
Not only was Rondo ejected in the loss to the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night, but he has also been suspended by the NBA for two games. There is no question that the Celtics are struggling this season and be involved in a blockbuster trade before the NBA trade deadline on March 15. It is uncertain if Rajon Rondo will be traded, but if any player is on the trading block right now and is appealing to other teams around the league it is the 25-year-old point guard.
Rajon Rondo couldn’t have picked a worse time to get suspended as he will miss two crucial games against the defending NBA champion Dallas Mavericks (Monday, Feb. 20) and arguably the best team in the Western Conference in the Oklahoma City Thunder (Wed. Feb. 22). These two games will be the last for the Boston Celtics before the NBA All-Star break this weekend. This might be the last game Rondo plays in a Celtics uniform if traded this week or over the weekend.
