The World Cup has been going on for a few weeks now and we have finally reached the quarter finals of the tournament.  So, what teams made it and whom did they beat out to get there?  Let’s take a look.

One of the latest finalists to move into the quarter finals was Ghana.  Ghana was able to successfully beat out the USA team this past Saturday evening.  They couldn’t have done it without the extra time, of course, but they still beat out the USA 2-1.  Ghana will find themselves up against Uruguay in the quarter finals on July 2 in Johannesburg.  Uruguay was able to successfully beat out South Korea on Saturday 2-1 to advance. Saturday’s game between the USA and Ghana was a knockout round – round of 16.  One team would proceed to the Finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup while one team would head home disappointed.  This year, for a second consecutive time, the USA was eliminated from this year’s World Cup by Ghana.

Ghana beat out the USA Saturday night 2-1.  In just the fifth minute of the match, Kevin Prince Boateng was able to get the ball away from Ricardo Clark and scored from about 16 yards off USA’s goalie Tim Howard.  This put Ghana ahead early in the match. Continue Reading…

Switzerland is known for their awesome defense but it seems that it wasn’t enough this time to take them to the next round of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.  Sure, they had what it took to take out Spain in their opening game and defeat them but it wasn’t enough in the end.

In three games, Switzerland was only able to achieve a single goal and was unable to gain the advancement to the second round of the 2010 World Cup due to not being able to successfully claim a score in Friday’s game against Honduras at Free State Stadium. Continue Reading…

Even though both the United States and England could only draw in their first two games, they were able to get one goal victories on Wednesday. Despite not many people giving Algeria and Slovenia much chance of advancing to the next round out of Group C, both of these teams gave the Americans and English all they could handle in the group stage. Portugal scores seven goals on North Korea
Added June 21st, 2010 by Ryan

The 2010 World Cup has been extremely unpredictable so far as only a handful of teams have actually lived up to the hype heading into the tournament. The one team that hasn’t seemed to have missed a step is the tournament favorite in Brazil, who just recently dominated Didier Drogba and the Ivory Coast with a 3-1 victory, but other teams like Spain and England have really struggled in the early going.

Another team thought to go far in the tournament, but has found it hard to live up to expectations so far is Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal. Heading into the tournament, Ronaldo and company were thought to give teams like Brazil and Spain a run for their money, but after a 0-0 draw against Ivory Coast, many people started to question whether or not Portugal had what it took to advance to the next round.
