The 2012 NBA All-Star game takes place this weekend at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida and before Wednesday the rosters were pretty much set in stone for both the Eastern and Western Conferences. With the recent injury to guard Joe Johnson (tendinitis) of the Atlanta Hawks, one spot has opened up in the East.

One player thought to be an alternate if a player was injured was Johnson’s teammate with the Hawks in forward Josh Smith. With Smith playing All-Star caliber basketball right now and arguably one of the biggest All-Star snubs this year, the consensus was that he would fill the void if a player went down, but the fact that Johnson is a guard meant that they had to replace him with a guard.

The Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo will be the one replacing Joe Johnson this Sun. Feb. 26 in Orlando. Even though this will be tough for Smith to swallow, especially since there won’t be any player representing the Atlanta Hawks, it would be hard to argue that Rondo isn’t just as deserving.

This season Rajon Rondo has put up big numbers once again for the Boston Celtics averaging 14.8 points, 4.9 rebounds and an impressive 9.5 assists per game. Rondo is just behind two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns in the assists per game department (11 apg).

Ironically enough, Rondo got on the NBA’s bad side recently with a two-game suspension after throwing a basketball at a referee. Rondo’s actions were totally unnecessary and personally I was surprised he wasn’t suspended for more games. Along with this suspension, Rondo may have played his last game in a Celtics uniform if he is traded over the weekend or immediately after it.
