After a lot of speculation over the past few months, the Minnesota Timberwolves have finally come to an agreement with Kevin Love on a contract extension. Even though this extension isn’t the max contract that Love would’ve liked to have been offered and former UCLA teammate Russell Westbrook received (5-year $80 million) from the Oklahoma City Thunder, the league’s best power forward was still able to cash in at $60 million over four years with an opt-out clause after the third year.

This makes things very interesting for Kevin Love with an opt-out clause in the contract that could potential breakup the entire team in Minnesota. Not only will Love have the option to get out of this deal three years from now, but Ricky Rubio’s rookie contract and new head coach Rick Adelman’s contract will expire at the same time.

With that being said, the Timberwolves will have only three years to turn the corner with this current team intact. That is a lot of pressure to get on the winning track in such a small window of time in the NBA. This is possible for Minnesota as this team seems to be coming together with a career year from Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio quickly turning into one of the league’s best floor generals, but they still struggle to closeout games.

In my opinion, the Minnesota Timberwolves are a team on the rise in the Western Conference and as long as they can continue to improve, the playoffs will be on the horizon on an annual basis for Kevin Love and company. This opt-out clause and the fact that the T’Wolves didn’t offer the max contract does shed some doubt in Minnesota, but if they can get on track and make the playoffs this team will be moving in the right direction.
