Government should have reversed order on Dahi Handi festival: Shiv Sena

26 August 2025

The fresh plea has been filed by Mumbai-based Jai Jawan Krida Mandal Govinda Pathak.

Thane in Mumbai suburb, a "dahi handi" has been strung up at 49 feet this morning, It is more than double the height which was allowed by the Supreme Court yesterday.

A day after the apex court upheld the Bombay High Court's August 2014 order regarding restrictions on the Dahi-handi revellers, a miffed Raj had said: "Who has given powers to the courts to interfere in festivals that we have been celebrating for years?"

The Shiv Sena has also expressed displeasure and said the government should have come out with an Ordinance reversing the apex court order.

Mumbai: A Mumbaikar has managed to bypass the recent Supreme Court verdict on limiting the height of Dahi Handi to 21 meters, and in the process, managed to win the dahi handi competition in Mulund.

Since Dahi Handi is celebrated across all major cities, including Ahmedabad, Surat and those in Saurashtra, with much fanfare on Janmashtami, the State is seriously mulling to declare it as an adventure sport similar to that of mountaineering, rock climbing etc, Gujarat Sports, Youth and Cultural Affairs minister Rajendra Trivedi told PTI.

Sena said the police, instead of going about their duty of catching criminals, will now have to roam place to place to follow the SC's guidelines and keep a watch on the height of human pyramids and age of "govindas" (youth who form human pyramids to break pot of curd).

Inslee said, "Our forests and wild lands are under attack from climate change", which has caused "explosive conditions". It was ignited Saturday when a car's catalytic converter busted, sending hot debris into the nearby grassy rangeland.

On Wednesday, the apex court had set a maximum height of 20 feet for the human pyramids formed during the celebrations. "I would have been happy if it had brought any medal", Justice Anil R. Dave said in court.

Mr Thackeray is expected to visit Thane this evening for the dahi handi.

Some other organisations also constructed pyramids that were more than four tiers or exceeding 20 feet and even used minor boys to break the Dahi Handi.

The plea argued that pyramids could be taller as the participants were all above 18 years.

During the hearing, the petitioner stated that 170 people were admitted in 2012 and 190 people were seriously injured during the event the very next year.

One of the directions, suspended by the apex court, related to amending the existing law to bar children below 18 years of age from participating in unsafe performances like being part of the human pyramid of "Dahi-Handi" festival.
